Baby, its cold outside

28 April, 2016 Frankfurt to Heidelberg

We depart from the FRA terminal and follow the signs to the rail terminals. They are confusing in that there seems to be at least 3 differnet options. Julie proceeds ahead and eventually finds a ticket office to book our path to Heidelberg. The next train does not takeoff for about an hour so we settle into the platform to wait.

MAJOR MISTAKE it is still 1 degree out there and there is a bit of a wind through the tracks as well. I do not really realise until later what I have put my body through. In essence, I have chilled my inner core such that I am shivering for much of the rest of the day. To make matters worse, the train is delayed for another 15 minutes. When the train does arrive, it is very crowded and when boarding there is a scramble for a seat. JV, who is looking after the baggage, gets a seat at the front of the carriage whereas I manage to find another. The trip to Mannheim is uneventful other than we arrive 15 minutes late expecting to miss our connection. Happily, the connection is also late and we manage to get on the next train. It too is crowded, but I manage to get a seat and shortly thereafter an Asian guy gives up his for Julie. We meet some nice people along the way that help us translate the German announcements and get off the train at Heidelberg main station.

We call Ciaran, who is our host from Airbnb, and decide to take a taxi to his place. JV disappears into a tourist bureau for an extended period and when she comes out we hop into a taxi and take the trip across to the old town, Altstadt, and arrive to find Ciaran waiting for us outside. He is a genuine nice guy and shows us into the apartment and tells us quite a bit about it and the old town around us including advice on restaurants etc. The apartment is exactly as pictured on Airbnb, clean, roomy I could easily live in it. After Ciaran leaves, we settle in and unpack the suitcases. Before long, JV departs prancing around the old town. I try to have a nap but am shivering too much to sleep. Ciaran had turned on the wall heaters before we arrived but they struggled with the cold as well. Finally, I ha a long, hot shower which helped matters quite a bit.

After about 3 hours of prancing, Julie returns and we head out into the old town to get something to eat. I added more clothing layers but it still is quite cold out except when in the sun. The old town is delightful with many old buildings and lots of restaurants, many of them having seats out in the sun in large courtyards. Probably is much of a tourist attraction but then, afterall, we are but tourists too.

After walking around for a while and looking for appropriate restaurants in the Sun, we settle on Joe Molese as we see a large hamburger on one of the tables. We have a spot in the sun which is nice when it is not behind a crowd. Turns out that at the time, Joe Molese was rated third best restaurant in Heidelberg, and best burger. However, there was a rumour of a change of owners and a deterioration. The next day it had dropped to 19 on Trip Advisor.

My burger was fine, with nice onion rings. A bit messy and too much to eat but filled the spot nicely.

We wander around the streets and find by accident a place at Julie had been told about – the Wein Atrium.

It is basically just a wine shop with lots of quaint stuff inside.

The shop owner proposed two wines for us which we bought. A Riesling and:

After the hot shower, the hot meal, the warm sun etc. I was just about feeling OK again with the chattering gone. I had a lovely afternoon nap. Then when Julie returned from her latest prance, she had bought me some more warm clothes which I have to say worked out well.

After the large lunch I did not feel like dinner so had a piece of toast while Julie had salmon etc.

To Europe 2016

27 April, 2016 – MEL, SIN, FRA

Wèll,here we are at Melbourne airport to take off to Europe for a five week tour going to all new places.

As I am about to go through security, I realise I have made a colossal blunder, I disconnected the laptop from its attachments and then forgot to put it in the travel bag. What a goose! So I am trying to use Julie^s Pad to do the Blog work and am suffering. It has taken me 20 minutes just to do these two paragraphs with the Backspace key the most commonly used. Arghh! I may have to give up on the Blog until I can get better facilities i.e. a real PC.

This realisation came after the check in Girl told us there may be a baggage strike in Germany which could mean being stranded in Singapore. Naturally I was feeling a bit down waiting in the lounge.

Anyway, we take off. The first leg is with Singapore Airlines. It’s a modern plane, clean and great staff. Just what you would expect from Singapore Airlines. They have a new feature for first, business and premium economy flyers called Book the Còok whereby passengers can select a meal in advance from an extensive menu devised by famous chefs, Australia^s representative is Matt Moran.

BTW the green curry was incredibly pungent, I would rate it as one of the best I have ever had.

(Guys, I just went through a convoluted process to get those two photos in the Blog. The only two on this post, not sure if I will give up or not ).

Anyway, the flight to Singapore was good. I saw the latest Star Wars which was OK albeit second billing Mark Hammill as Luke Skywalker was on the screen for about two minutes only at the end and did not speak.

Arrival in Singapore was smooth. We got to Terminal 2 easily and to a lounge which had lots of food variety, not that we needed more. The great thing was there no mention of a strike and hence no forced layover. We board our next flight which is with Lufthansa. It’s an older plane not as nice as the previous flight. The food menu is not as exciting. There is smoked salmon and smoked duck for starters we exchange although hangover from the previous flight, I have trouble eating it all. I had a steak while Julie had cod.

In the night, I fall asleep sitting up and it appeared like my glasses fell off into the aisle where someone stepped on them, smashing them with one lens broken. Oh well, there is a spare in the suitcase.

For breakfast I have some Asian noodles, on a German flight, and Julie has salmon, etc. I forgot to mention but our stewardess Barbara was really nice. The pilot had told us that it was a toasty 1 degree outside, and we can feel that on the air bridge as we get off the plane. Passage through FRA is smooth enough if you forget about the 5 mile walk from gate to immigration. We pass through that with only a slight hiccup. Onto baggage and our cases are among the first off. Replacement glasses for me, extra clothes layers for Julie. We are ready for the next stage of the journey – train to Heidelberg!

Julie’s Zeroth Birthday

16-18 April, 2016 – Melbourne

JV had had an exotic previous zeroth birthday on the Great Wall of China and then being to a grand celebration dinner hosted by the Chinese Government. Her last fifth birthday was also exotic as she was feted at a Birthday celebration banquet hosted by the May of Bordeaux in Bordeaux. This zeroth was more low key in that it was held in the home town of Melbourne, but it was still exciting.

16 April – Sue & Ian’s Place

We were driven to (and from) their place by Gary Benbow – thanks a lot Gary. Sue really put on a spread:

Sue's Magical Menu

The themes behind the menu were Black, because Julie always wears black, black and white for her Footy team and lots of other homilies relating, including Croatian words as we will be heading there shortly on our next overseas trip. We had first cocktails, a Manhattan, at the back patio and also the first course – blini with avocado and prawn. Being out of practice I did not get any photos of that part. It started to rain and so we came in for the rest of the magic.

18 April – Claypots St Kilda

The birthday itself was held with Julie’s family in a St Kilda restaurant called Claypots Seafood Bar. We had opted for the multi-course fixed menu. I did not get a lot of photos.

We were seated in the outdoor courtyard. The weather was good enough so that we did not get cold. Note: the base of the courtyard was gravel. Not sure I have seen that before. When I sat down the chair leg settled deeply in the gravel.

The Blue Swimmer Crab was the biggest I had ever seen and it was quite tasty.

Being a weekday, the night finished relatively early. Thanks to Ryan for driving us home.

Epilogue: Group Reunion

1 April, 2016 – Group Reunion at Movida Aqui

It had been long discussed with little action but on April 1, a group of us Fools got together for a reunion at Movida Aqui. Most of the tour guests appeared but Frank was unavailable, having just returned from Bali, and Suze and Josh were overseas.

With large groups, Movida requires a set menu which we were happy to proceed with. Frank had organised a glass of Sherry each and we ordered one or two bottles of white, red and rose. Then the food started to come out.

Time passed by very quickly with lots of things to say by most of the group. These next photos are two hours later – we were in the “early shift” of sittings at Movida but I guess Frank organised it in advance for us not to be thrown out.

It was a great night and, given the size of the bill, we might have had a couple of (dozen) wines each. It was resolved that we would organise further reunions with perhaps the next one to be scheduled in 6 months time. Gracias to all who attended especially for those under-privileged that came from NSW.

As an aside, the next day I watched an episode of Rick Stein in Spain. It was based partially in Seville, the start of our tour, What was noticeable was:

* Rick meeting Frank in a restaurant
* The same Flamenco dancer we had seen although in a much more crowded scene
* Rick in the same Tapas bar which was one we went to on the first night of the tour.

Like Anthony Bordain all they know to do is to follow us around! Hasta la vista.
