At this point I would like to say a bit about the Food in Finland. The food has been rubbished by Jacques Chirac and Silvio Berlusconi when they said that Finnish Food and British food are the most boring in the world. A funny thing happened when a Finn company Kotipizza won an international prize for its Pizza Berlusconi, defeating Italian pizzas in the contest.

Pizza Berlusconi is Kotipizza’s product name for a pizza of smoked reindeer, with tomato, cheese, chanterelle mushrooms and red onion.

Kotipizza named the pizza after Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in their summer 2008 ad campaign and menu. Berlusconi had caused a minor diplomatic incident in 2005, when he said that he had had to “endure” Finnish cuisine, and joked disparagingly about Finns eating “marinated reindeer”. Although marinated reindeer is a common dish in Lapland, in the rest of Finland the meat is traditionally stewed or dried.

Any way, we are up relatively early and leaving for Helsinki around 11:00. Julie goes out to the food court to get her breakfast.

By the usual 3-1 vote, we start the walk to the train station very early, before Noon. We sit around in uncomfortable, crowded seats in the train station.

The trip takes 2 1/2 hours. The weather changes dramatically at least 8 time along the way. When we arrive in Helsinki, the ground is wet but it is not raining much.

Our host had indicated that we should catch a taxi from the station to the apartment. We picked a medium sized cab and the driver did a remarkable job of cubic close packing to fit everything in. When we get to the apartment, we receive a message that our Host was travelling and we would be met by a delightful young girl, Riika. The door was chocked open when we arrive and Riika arrives shortly after and we go up to the apartment.

She shows us around and after she departs, I take a couple of photos.

We had not had much to eat today so send Julie out to scout around. In the mean time, I throw Ryan out of a spot at the kitchen table to do my work. Outside is a dog park. There are a lot of dogs within and of course a little yapper was chasing them all around.

Exploring Turku

Turku is the original Finland Capitol. It is a quaint old village, nice. We get a good sleep and go out to tour around the town. After several blocks of walking we end up at an outdoor market. Some snaps from there.

Ferry Ride Across to Turku, Finland

Wednesday, 3 October, 2018 – Weather – who cares we are leaving town

Loyal followers of this Blog. If you find yourself in a situation where you cannot see the photos and / or the captions or alignments are messed up, please go to http://www.beauperi.com directly and all those problems should go away.

We are up early this morning as we have to go to the docks to catch our Ferry across the Fjord to Turku, the original Capitol of Finland. The guys have ordered take away breakfast boxes while I nibbled on the leftover BBQ ribs from our fridge.

Yesterday, I had the Hotel order a large taxi to take all of our baggage and us. Sure enough a small taxi showed up. We had no choice but to take two taxis to the docks.

I had also communicated with the Cruise line, Viking, about timings. They said the gate would open at 6:15 and they wanted everyone off the street to be inside by 6:45.

Waiting outside the entrance

We are processed fairly quickly and, via a ticket machine, assigned our rooms and get room ticket cards. We are sent to another staging area, it is 6:20 and we are told that we cannot board the ship until 7:20, another hour sitting around. Lots of other people are also shunted into this area. Initially they were all female couples. It is amazing how many same sex couples we saw throughout Scandinavia. Eventually, some hetero couples arrived.

When we are finally let in, we go to our room which is an inner berth. If I thought the room in Stockholm was small, well this really took the cake.

20181003_073501
The Beds, swinging a mouse would not have been possible let alone a cat

I have a brief nap and then go up a floor to where the guys are hanging out.

We are cruising through the Stockholm Archipelago of 30,000 islands, skerries and rocks fans out 80 km east into the Baltic Sea from the city. It rather overwhelms the “thousand islands” around the Philippines.

The sister Ferry returning to Stockholm

All up the cruise took about 11 hours. We go down to the exit point and it is closed until the station master carefully and slowly guides the landing plank into place. When opened there is a mad rush to get off the boat and into taxis, with the departing staff given a major head start. We get out to the taxi queue and there was one full sized taxi near the end of the queue. We convince him to take us with a little persuasion.

Ryan guides the driver as we have to go to one location to pick up a key and then to another where we ware staying. When we get there we see that it is a huge old Hotel, circa 1880s that has been converted into apartments.

20181003_201731
The old hotel name

We try various entrances and none of them leads to our apartment. Finally, Julie spots the right entrance and Ryan verifies that it is the correct place. I noticed our entrance is right next to a Strip Club.

Inside the apartment, it is massive.

Note the various degrees of pornography on the wall. It would seem that our landlord is a proud bi-sexual.

The beds were comfortable enough but very low making it difficult to get up from them. Note also there are plants everywhere in the apartment. He is obviously trying to be carbon neutral.

It was after 10:00 PM and most of us were hungry. The guys went out and came back relatively quickly with:

20181003_211207
Shaved Lamb Souva with loaded fries and salad

Boy did that hit the spot. I could not finish it all. Julie had a salad which was added to from my box. Tanika had some kind of chicken schnitzel which she heated up in the microwave.

After a long day and a long distance, it really was time for bed.

The Whiskey Warehouse

Tuesday, 2 October, 2018 – Nice Looking Day
Loyal followers of this Blog. If you find yourself in a situation where you cannot see the photos and / or the captions or alignments are messed up, please go to http://www.beauperi.com directly and all those problems should go away.

We started with the usual free breakfast which was much less crowded that time of day than yesterday. We get the same table and largely the same foods, Julie Smoked Salmon again. I commit a faux pax by using glutinous bread in a gluten free only toaster. Julie decided not to do a swim this morning and heads off for more prancing.

I have a very quiet day inside for much of it. We decide that we would like to go to the Whiskey Warehouse for dinner tonight. Julie makes a booking through the Net for 6:00. The plan to save some walking is to use the second day of the Hop On / Off to drop us in the Old Town at the start and then walk home.

We board the last bus at a bit before 5:00 and are planning to get off at the early stop for the Old Town but in a good move, Julie asks the driver who tells her that that stop is closed for construction. So we hop off basically in the middle of the street and get there. Yesterday’s Post had a photo out the front.

The meatballs were a combination of reindeer, moose and a little beef. They were indeed gamey and quite good.

I safely negotiate the KM walk back to the Hotel, there was some lubrication with a bottle of red. When we get back, we have to pack as we have an early ride to the Ferry that will take us to Finland tomorrow.

More to do in Stockholm

Apologies, but several of the aspects I assigned to yesterday, actually happened today. For example, we started the Hop on Hop Off tour today. However, I am not going to go back and change yesterday’s Post so please tolerate the sequential inaccuracy.

We have the buffet breakfast and them Julie goes up to the roof top and jumps into the pool. As promised, I follow her up with the camera.

We then decided to go on the Hop On/Bus tour and Julie got tickets from the front desk.

20181001_122451
The girl at the front had a very strong American accent and was the Chief Spruiker.

She told us the bus would leave in 10 minutes, which we know means 25 minutes. Even after that timeframe, they still did not leave – apparently they were waiting and waiting for another group to arrive. Finally, we got on the road.

Here is where a lot of the stuff from yesterday about the Old Town etc. would be plugged in. We went on all the way around which was a different route than shown on the map, presumably because of all the road construction.

I went back to the Hotel room for napping and Blogging while Julie went out prancing. Some of her photos along the way.

Sadly, there were no Ham Hocks available today, a large group of road workers were in the area and they and snaffled them all. So I go for another alternative:

Pulled Beef and spuds
20181001_180251
I also got a mess of BBQed ribs

We ate there in the food all with the road workers next to us. Julie had Smoked Salmon and a salad again. I did not finish all of the ribs so we took them with us. It was back to the Hotel to have some more red wine and drift off to sleep.
