Back in the Saddle Again

Friday, 21 June, 2019 – Weather – in Melbourne – Yukky

Yes, the weather is definitely ordinary – cold, wet, miserable with very strong wind gusts.

As for the title of this post, it is not about the singing cowboy, Gene Autry, but rather me getting back into WordPress posts again after what seems a very long break. So here goes, with me focusing on Food and Wine as usual. At the same time, my friend and accountant, Neil Bishop, is in North America and I will be including photos etc. from Neil’s trip which has looked interesting so far.

We spent another post Easter in the Barossa Valley for the bi-annual Food and Wine festival and that would have been an ideal event to have posted lots of pages. However, I failed to do so, though given time, I imagine I can create some of it from the photos I took. For the moment I am focusing on special cooking, and drinking, primarily happening at Chateau Lara.

After dithering at this point for several days, I have decided to close this Post and move on to the many others that I can do, for myself, and Neil’s as well. Probably my loyal followers have got tired of waiting but here we are.

The Blue Boat

Monday, 17 September, 2018 – Third Day in Copenhagen

The weather is again fairly warm and nice. It is also Julie’s first dayat the autonomous vehicles conference. We hear from her that her paper has been published in the conference journal along with Son Peter’s clever drawing of an autonomous vehicle with a learner permit. Peter was also acknowledged. We did not hear from Julie again until she returned home at the end of the day.

So Ryan and I head out to the Red Bus to catch a ride to where the Blue Boat is berthed. Same crappy music as the day before (I did not mention it in yesterday’s post but it was an instrumental on continuous loop and really grated after a while).

The Blue Boat at berth

As you can see, there is no cover at all and the sky is very threatening. Other boats we see have cover available and are a lot more luxurious. We follow them around most of the day.

Awaiting take off

I did not take any photos of the scenery as we had seen much of it from the bus already and after all this is a food and wine blog, not a scenes and sites. The boat also did not take the promised routs some of the time.

Any way, we get off the bus at the dock where we started after a couple of hours and decide we wold rather walk back rather then troop along the red bus path that we did yesterday. We were a bit hungry so decided to stop at a hotdog cart for a bite.

P1030308

The variety of sausages

They were very good sausages but it turned out that with conversion to AUD and overseas charges this little snack cost AUD $68. Geez, the snag from the bratwurst shop at the Vic Market is much better and a quarter the price.

We take a different rout back through the financial and shopping districts but it still is a long way home. I am tired and sore again when we arrive.

Julie comes home and said she had a really hard day. When Ryan quizzes here, repeatedly she said she was stressed from opposition to her view questions. After continual clarifications sought, she admitted that it was she was afraid there would be not that there actually was. She followed by Prince Fred, who was a poor speaker, and her speech went well. She met some other interesting people on the panel and had good discussions with them.

We make a booking at a place that is very close to us, Restaurant Cofoco. It is a Monday night, and like many other places around the world, most restaurants are closed. The earliest booking we could get is 8:30 which we have to take as there is nothing else. Too late for Tanika to eat.

Cofoco is just a short distance but sadly we walk right by it and go a long distance out of the way, all the way back to the train station and past our house again before we see it on the second time around. Inside, we are given a menu but then no waitress approach for nearly 30 minutes, I was ropable. An way, once a waitress finally approached us we got excellent service but that long delay at the start was horrible. The food was also excellent. I cannot recall what some of the dishes were but show them any way.

Epilogue: Group Reunion

1 April, 2016 – Group Reunion at Movida Aqui

It had been long discussed with little action but on April 1, a group of us Fools got together for a reunion at Movida Aqui. Most of the tour guests appeared but Frank was unavailable, having just returned from Bali, and Suze and Josh were overseas.

With large groups, Movida requires a set menu which we were happy to proceed with. Frank had organised a glass of Sherry each and we ordered one or two bottles of white, red and rose. Then the food started to come out.

When there were changes of plates we organised some “people shuffle” so that the group could intermix. Here are some of the small groups:

Time passed by very quickly with lots of things to say by most of the group. These next photos are two hours later – we were in the “early shift” of sittings at Movida but I guess Frank organised it in advance for us not to be thrown out.

It was a great night and, given the size of the bill, we might have had a couple of (dozen) wines each. It was resolved that we would organise further reunions with perhaps the next one to be scheduled in 6 months time. Gracias to all who attended especially for those under-privileged that came from NSW.

As an aside, the next day I watched an episode of Rick Stein in Spain. It was based partially in Seville, the start of our tour, What was noticeable was:

* Rick meeting Frank in a restaurant
* The same Flamenco dancer we had seen although in a much more crowded scene
* Rick in the same Tapas bar which was one we went to on the first night of the tour.

Like Anthony Bordain all they know to do is to follow us around! Hasta la vista.

Top 10 Photos – Andalusia 2015

We asked each of the participants in the just finished Andalusia tour to send us their “top 10” photos from the tour. This Post is the contributions from other members of the group. I am putting these in this Post without censorship albeit some repeats are omitted. The are inserted in the order in which they were received – gudonya Anna and Frank that were hot off the mark.

John went to an enormous effort to gather all of his many great photos and put them on Dropbox. He could not make a selection of Top 10, so I have done so, albeit there may be more than 10. It was a difficult job being so selective. So here goes:

Julie – the Last Man Sitting

During our glorious final dinner, Josh announced that your editor was the only member of the group to participate in every one of the events. He called me “The Last Man Standing”. I felt that the title should have been “Last Man Sitting” as per the following photos from Julie.

A Bad Day at Black Rock

Friday, 9 October, 2015

Well, the tour is over and we will start on the road home. We meet a couple of the group at Breakfast but then have to head off to the Train station to return to Madrid and then Melbourne. There are no pictures for this day – the reason is below. Why was it a bad day – there were two things major that went wrong.

Montezuma’s Revenge

I mentioned that two of the party had missed last night’s dinner and two left in the middle. The reason was “Montezuma’s Revenge”, food poisoning leading to vomiting and/or diarrhoea. Another one or two had gone down over night but we had escaped it. WRONG!

As we were waiting for our train at Malaga Station, it struck Julie who suffered all the way to Madrid on the train trip. The good thing was that it only lasted a few hours and she was pretty much good to go after we arrived in Madrid. Me, I missed out totally.

I have not heard from everyone, but it would seem that at least half of our group got it in some way. There is a common vote that it was caused by the Sardines from yesterday. I am not so sure, could it have been the raw prawns or clams at the cooking school? Not a nice thing at all.

Stolen Phone

While out for dinner in Madrid I was taking photos with the phone and had (foolishly) left it on the table. A guy came up and spread a big piece of paper with words on it which we assumed was begging for money. Instead he used it to purloin my phone away. Moral: don’t leave your phone or other valuables out in the open and if anybody spreads a paper or newspaper in front of you, beware – something tricky is going to happen.

We talked with some police who drove by afterwards. They said they were aware of the guy but could really do nothing. They suggested we go to the main police station, which Julie did. They eventually agreed to take a report, which really won’t do us any good because the Travel Insurance company will create massive barriers for claiming it. She did not return until after midnight.

One corollary that occurred is that our Internet access went down in the evening and we were unable to advise Vodafone of the theft until the next afternoon. There was one good thing that had happened though. I had not uploaded my photos for over a week but was lucky enough to have done that in the afternoon when we got to Madrid, otherwise my Blog would have been quite empty of colour during the second half of the tour. However, the lost phone is the reason that there are no photos for this day as I was using the camera on the phone.

Otherwise

Forgetting Julie’s problems, the train trip was quite pleasant. We first went to Cordoba and then onto Madrid. During the first leg, first class again, we could only get orange juice but the second leg there were drinks and food albeit some ordinary sandwiches. At Madrid Station we take a taxi to our apartment and arrived earlier than expected.

The owner’s partner met us pretty much straight away and showed us to the apartment, helping the bags up the few flights of stairs to/from the Elevators. It was a good size, fully functional apartment with a large bedroom which makes it easier to layout the suitcases.

The area of Madrid we were in was good and we settled on an OK restaurant although I can remember little about it because of the phone thingo.

Epilogue

The next morning we go out to get some Brekky and end up in a place in Plaza Mayor. The Plaza is undergoing renovations all around the outside but it did not stop the restaurants from operating. I had a relatively crummy meal, fitting that the last meal on the trip would be the worst.

Back at the apartment, we meet the owner Kristian who seemed to be a very nice guy. He gave us a great rating on Airbnb as guests. We donated to him some leftover Brandy that Julie had picked up on the trip. Gudonya, Kristian.

Link to Kristian

We went out to the Airport relatively early, by taxi, since we may as well. We went into the lounge where we had been a couple of years before. It was quite nice with appropriate drinks and food. I am able to get onto Vodafone via Skype to cancel / disable the stolen phone.

We eventually get on the plane to travel to MEL, gee it is a long way / time. We stop again in Doha and the lounge there is very impressive. Back on the plane and another 13+ hours to MEL. Thus Business Class layout for Doha to MEL was not as nice as MAD to Doha. We got the bad seat 5B (last time it was 5J) – try to avoid these if you are ever in the same situation as the seat is effectively in the middle of the aisle and there is a lot of traffic going to the loo. Still it wasn’t that bad and I did get some sleep, but as I said above, gee it is a long flight.

At MEL at 11:00 PM, there are several other planes that have landed ahead of us. This meant that although our bags came off quickly, we were in a long queue to escape – my fault we did not use our priority pass. Still we exit without any checks and our friend Gary and daughter Jess pick us up in our car. After the drive home, we get there after midnight – with a couple of bruises on the last day but otherwise safe and sound and glad of a great trip.

The next Post will be contributions from other members of the group. We asked them to send us “Top 10” photos which I will be putting in that Post without censorship.
