Again it is a beautiful day. After a pretty good breakfast buffet, Julie goes over to the train station and buys each of us an all day travel pass. Eventually we go to the station and jump on a train that is going to the peak behind Oslo.

The idea was to see the Ski Jump and the view of Oslo from up above. We actually never saw the ski jump.

We did not stay long at the peak and took the same train back down the hill. There were lots of ski lodges and expensive houses up there.

We get off the train with the intention to walk to the nearest tram stop. It is a fair bit away. After a coffee stop, we continue on and we stop at a site.

There is also a site about naked women protesting including, apparently, a signature statue of a woman taking a pee in protest?? There may even be a third site for transgender folk. We decided the one would be enough.

We cross over the water and reach a tram stop relatively close by.

The destination is the fish market / food court. We get off the tram but it is a fairly long walk. Ryan eventually guides us there with his phone.

I had heard from my Scandinavian work colleagues when I spent time in Stockholm that the Norwegian girls were the best looking in the world. I was quite skeptical but as I spotted various talent around, I reached the same conclusion.

Ryan and Tanika headed off on their own and I did not really see them again until Saturday morning when we left town. We took the long walk back to the Tram and then home.

When we went to dinner that night I was not very hungry at all. There was a somewhat spicy Thai soup which was just what the doctor ordered and an early bed after a very filled day.

Day 2 in Gothenburg

The Breakfast buffet was pretty good

Julie and I go out early to have a look at the town of Gothenburg. A bad thing happened that put me in a foul mood – get over it!

I go back to the Hotel and rest and Blog for the rest of the day. It is a Sunday and we find that most of the restaurants are closed on Sundays, at least so far. We walk around for a while and pick a place that we should not have. It was Greek / Lebanese / Turkish. The food was OK but the prices were horrendous – a bottle of average Australian wine, probably not more than $20 in a restaurant in Australia was over $200 AUD here and the food prices were ridiculously similar. I should have walked away and gone to a KFC or something like that, instead I got mad – useless of me.

I don’t recall what I had to eat or even if a had anything. One glass of expensive of wine may have been it.

We wandered around afterwards to try to find some wine but found that on Sundays one could not buy “hard liquor” like wine and spirits.

As we were returning home a Lamborghini roared by. It was driven by the tall, (fake) blonde, Greek girl who had been in our restaurant

So that was it, bad stuff at the start and end, mostly my fault.

Beer

Wednesday, 19 September, 2018 Day 5 in Copenhagen

Carlsberg Brewery Tour

It is another really nice day although we were warned that the good weather was about to end. Ryan and I made our way to the usual bus stop and jumped on a red bus which took us to the brewery.

As we enter the grounds we see a lot of construction going on with some large holes in the ground. This was described as a new city being built i.e. lots of apartments.

P1030357
The old brewery and the entrance for the tour

We are doing a self guided tour inside. I didn’t take many photos because, frankly, I have done many before and did not find this too much different from other old breweries I had seen.

There were rides offer to visitors on beer carts driven by Clydesdales. At the end of the tour we could smell at a distance the stables for the horses.

Beer Tasting

A highlight of the day was to taste several of the brewery’s beers. Our tasting guide was an American from Seattle, about 200 mile from my home town of Portland, Oregon.

Sharing the tasting with us was a Chinese couple from Singapore. When we first arrived the girl asked me if I was from California!!! Given I haven’t lived in California for over 46 years, she had a very perceptive ear. Turns out they had lived in the USA for years. Any way, our guide had talked about a special bottle that he had found which when tried he considered not very good at all. The Chinese guy said why don’t we try it any way.

P1030386
Our guide was right, it was not very good

My favourite was the second beer which had very interesting clove and fruit tastes. The guide’s favourite was the IPA. All in all good fun, not bad for someone like me that does not drink beer.

Fleisch

Julie had a gala dinner at the conference so the three of us headed out to the Meat Packing District to a famous meat shop and restaurant called Fleisch.

P1030391
Looking out to the restaurants in the former meat packing shops

I will say right now that it looked like we were in the wrong place, maybe a warp in time. Service was generally poor. There was nothing like the various dishes shown on the websites with just 3 selections, essentially, and the quality of what was provided was mostly poor. I wonder what went wrong.

P1030393
We started with the bacon infused Manhattans

These were served at least 30 minutes after we ordered them. Then there was little or no bacon flavour.

P1030399
Ryan and I ordered the pork dish

Again the dishes arrived a long, long time after we ordered them. Then the crackling was good but otherwise the pork was tougher than an old boot.

P1030401
Crab Ravioli for Tanika

This was a major highlight of the night in that Tanika was forced to order the crab, which she had never had before, because there was no chicken on the menu. She loved it and that the big win. Of course, her course was served after a very long delay just like ours.

The cheese, especially the bleu was quite good. No more editorial comment other than what went wrong?

Turns out that Julie’s gala function was in another part of the Meat Packing District. So she ended up getting home much earlier than might have been expected otherwise.

Back to Victoria

Sunday, 23 April, 2017

In the morning, we have a small snack, the bleu cheese finally finished, and get on the road to drive back to Victoria.

Our Airbnb place, entrance next to the Black Beauty

Once again I have to apologise as most of the photos I took this day did not work out / show up. [BTW: I have bought a new camera for the coming Europe trip so hopefully none of this will happen again]

Any way, we drive from our Airbnb to get over the Adelaide Hills and onto the Western Highway. Google Maps does a poor job sending us in various directions but not to the main highway and we go up into the Hills to Crafers etc. Eventually, we join the freeway and are rolling. Since Julie has departed, I am doing all of the driving which I found very hard work concentrating.

We stop at our favourite? place in Coonalpyn, where Jan and Hugh share a Jaffle, which is kind of a closed in waffle.

The Road Ahead (a bit boring)

After a while we stop in Bordertown at a Roadhouse for lunch. I can’t recall what I have, not very good, and Jan and Hugh shared a chicken schnitzel roll which was by all accounts terrible. We drive into Victoria and stop at Great Western which is home to two very old wineries – Bests and Seppelts (remember that from the Barossa?)

We go into Bests and at least a few photos which are from a self guided tour we did in the cellar of this very old winery.

Note that it was now closed. We got there fairly late in the day because it was nearly 6 hours of driving. We still had the opportunity to go to Seppelts and tour the champagne drives, which were tunnels carved by miners in the 19th century, but it is decided we have had enough and we drive onto Ballarat where we will stay the night. We are in another Airbnb in a residential area of Ballarat. It is a nice older place well laid out and renovated. The owners had put out breakfast stuff for us and lots of figs from the garden, which are one of Julie’s favourites, too bad she is not here. We did not get to meet the owners but they were clearly very nice people.

We catch an Uber into the “big smoke”, downtown Ballarat. It actually is livelier than I remember when last I was here. Hugh has picked out another Brew Pub where we go in for a taste.

The choice of beers
Hugh’s favourite was again the Little Creatures IPA
The Beer Supply to the Taps

We agreed that we would have our dinner there, a poor choice in retrospect.

We exit, agreeing that that had been crap food. What with the awful stuff we had on the road in South Australia, this was easily the worst gourmet day of the American Invasion.

We catch an Uber back to the Airbnb. As I was quite tired from the driving during the day, which I am no longer used to, a quick crash out for me.

Goodbye Julie

Saturday, 22 April, 2017

Today, we must leave the Barossa Valley and our Airbnb Mansion of the last 4 days. Julie goes to the local bakery and we have some thing to eat.

About to Exit
Departing Our Home

Before we totally leave the Barossa, our Airbnb Host had a small winery and suggested that we stopped by it on our way to Adelaide. So we find it “back in the woods” – it is called Moorooroo. The agreed pronunciation is “a cow and two kangas” – Moo-Roo_Roo.

Entrance

A lot of my photos did not work out, disappeared somehow, so some text instead for a while. We drive out of the Barossa and eventually into Adelaide – the Capital and largest city of South Australia. We drive to the airport and drop off Julie – why? Because she is flying to Melbourne and then onto London for her second week course at Oxford University. So, it is goodbye Julie and we drive to our Airbnb for the night. It is to be in Glenelg which is a beachside suburb with lots of restaurants and bars. In fact, the place is a fair distance south of Glenelg in a housing area with not much else around. Disappointing.

One good thing is that there is a train line nearby. So after we unload everything, we walk to the train line and catch a train into Adelaide proper. Once we get there, we walk around the square that is the centre of Adelaide.

In Adelaide

While walking around I have a tinge of sadness as one of our favourite restaurants from the past, Quiet Waters, had closed down. It was kind of a sleazy Lebanese but cheap and with good food. Any way, Hugh had found a brew pub so we walked around in circles for ages before we finally found it.

In the Brewhouse

The bar tender was brought Hugh a paddle of four beers

Beers
The Beers – Hugh’s favourite was the IPA, of course

The place was not too busy, they changed quickly, so the bartender took Jan and Hugh into the brewery part.

We then decide to go back towards Glenelg to get something to eat and crash out.

Our tickets had expired so Hugh gets some new ones

The Adelaide Train Station

The Adelaide Casino is also based within the train station, off to the right. But we decided not to go in and caught the train back to Glenelg. Once again, none of my pictures turned out so a bit more text. It is about a 10 minute walk from the train station to a restaurant that we had picked out. It was Chinese and we had a decent meal. We caught a taxi, again no Uber, back to our apartment and crashed.
