Partings, Castles and another “Taco Truck” Moment

Tuesday, 6 May

Well, it is goodbye this morning to Daisy and Barbara who have to return to Palo Alto for work. In the mean time we head South along Highway 1 and its beautiful ocean views. Around Big Sur we see some more itneresting Bridges.

After a while we stop for a drink break.

They served nice looking breakfasts on the Balcony but we did not think that we needed it. We drive further down the Coast to go to our highlight destination for the day, Hearst Castle. We stop at a cafe across the way from the entrance, but it is not serving food today. So, instead we drive to the Visitor’s Centre. This building is absolutely huge and was not there last time I visited, perhaps 25 years earlier. Like many of the tourist destinations we visited it is packed with tourists, offseason no less. There is a cafeteria there which serves semi-reasonable fast food, I had a pre-made Cheeseburger. We then watch a 37 minute film on William Randolph Hearst and the building of the Castle. Some famous guests were shown in the movie including a very young looking Clark Gable.

We take the shuttle bus up to the top with some interesting commentary over the bus intercom. Last time I was here we saw Zebras and so on, but this time only cattle.

We go on two tours (1) the standard Grand Rooms and (2) tour of the upstairs bedrooms. They modified the tours a few years ago and they, especially the first, were not as good as my previous visit, even the tour guides said similar things. We don’t take any photos during the tours as they did not want flash photography. So refer:

There is no doubting that Hearst Castle is an amazing place with priceless artworks of all kinds everywhere. It is a reflect of Hearst’s fabulous wealth.

We depart San Simeon to travel to our resting destination for the night – Morro Bay. Pat is on the phone to the Motel and it appears that there is some kind of trouble. It turns out that the parking lot had been re-sealed with asphalt and we would not be able to drive on it. The girls go look at the rooms and they are not what we had in mind either, as they were well separated apart. One of the rooms would have worked out OK as it actually had two bedrooms but we had ordered and paid for two rooms. We debate in the car for a while and eventually the owner shows up. He is very accommodating and says he will do anything that we like. We decide we will cancel and the owner helps Tom get a refund from booking.com. We drive away to find another place but after several phone calls, there is nothing really suitable in town.

So what’s this about a Taco Truck moment? Readers may recall that we had one in Sonoma and we use the term to mean good luck after misfortune or something like that. We decide to go back to the Motel that we had cancelled and see if we could get the room with the two bedrooms. YES! and it is a cost saving of 40% over the original reservation and there is another benefit tomorrow. We move our stuff into the room, but I am not allowed to carry anything and am supported by the two girls as when negotiating with the Motel, Tom and Pat indicated that I was a frail old cripple, maybe they were right. All’s well that ends well.

Pat has made a reservation at the #1 ranked restaurant in Morro Bay.

More in San Francisco

Saturday, 3 May

We are to meet Barbara at the Ferry Terminal in the City where there is a Farmer’s Market. My trustee parking permit gets us a place right outside the building which is great. We start out before Barbara gets there but She eventually find us. What a Farmer’s Market it was – it is easily the biggest I have seen by miles with lots of interesting stalls.

Barbara has booked lunch for us in a restaurant in the terminal building. It is Slanted Door, a Vietnamese fusion type of restaurant. Julie might have preferred just going around the shops all afternoon but any way there we were.

When we try to go home, the exit is blocked off and we have to get back on the bridge and drive all the way into the City before we can get back going the right way. We decide we will go look around Berkeley – the City and the campus. I had never been there before so it was quite interesting Very hilly. We decided that we would eat at home tonight as we will be on the road from tomorrow until the end of the trip. So, we stop by the Berkely Bowl to pick up produce for dinner, one of the largest stores, especially for produce, that I have ever seen.

Tom drives us up to the top of the hills for the view and then we head home. Dinner is left overs plus the stuff from BB. Off to bed, because we are traveling tomorrow.

Mayday, Mayday – a Taco Truck Moment

Thursday, 1 May

This is a day that starts quite badly, then lifts itself up into the clouds and then deteriorates at the end, for me any way. So, what happens?

We get on the road to drive to the wineries in Sonoma. On the way, we pass over some more interesting Bridges.

Pat had made a reservation for the first winery a long time ago. It is a two hour drive and what with traffic and all, we are going to arrive 10 minutes late at our first place which is famous for its food and wine pairing. I won’t mention the name of this place that I called, er I had better not mention that either. In any case, the winery says don’t bother to show up, we have been cancelled. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrh.

Pat spends some time on the phone trying to find an alternative venue. She finds a family winery that does some food matching but only with cheese. We decide that we will go there. So what is this taco truck nonsense I mention in the headline? Well, when Pat is talking to the winery it is indicated that there is not a real meal there, just small bits of cheese. However, just near the entrance to the winery is a Taco Truck which is rated by Sunset Magazine as the best around or something like that. So we find it and, hey, it is not bad. We use the terminology Taco Truck as something that means good luck after bad luck again later in the trip.

We then we left the Taco Truck and went to our destination: Lasseter Family Winery, where things got even better.

I refer you readers to the following Yelp review page which says a lot about the great things of this winery and the experience.

We are met by Cecil who is indeed very friendly and knowledgable. We tour some of the grape vines and then go into the cellar:

As I indicated earlier, the tasting is wine and small cheese pairing.

Impressive, eh?

We taste a wide range of wines, pretty good ones really. The Lasseter’s have done a lot of travel to France and give the wines French names. From my gaming background, I note that one of the wines is called Chemin de Fer which was American casinos used to call Baccarat. After the tasting is finished, we go back down into the cellar and meet the winemaker, Julia Iantosca.

All in all a fantastic time which makes us very happy that we awarded the Raspberry and experienced the “Taco Truck” wonderfulness.

We have an appointment with another Napa winery but have some spare time so we decide to go to Jack London State park.

http://www.jacklondonpark.com/

For those who don’t know, Jack was a famous American write at the start of the 20th century. He bought up lots of land in the Napa area and tried to reconstitue it after years of neglect. He also built some impressive buildings, one which was to be his castle burned down just before it was finished. Jack and his Wife were among the most famous people at the time and would have lots of famous guests visit. Sadly, Jack died at the age of 40. His Wife continued to live there another 40 years and eventually the property was donated to the State of California for a State Park.

In the house, we talk to the volunteers who work there, watch an interesting video on Jack and his property and do a self tour of the house. We are also taken on a guided tour of the guest house by one of the volunteers. Sadly, our time is short as we do not want to have another raspberry incident at the next winery. So we depart without having really done justice to the Park.

Our next stop is Repris winery. We drive up and up a big hill to get there.

We are greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable guide, Sean. The day s quite hot, look at that weather, amazing. Tom had bought some wine at Lasseters which they kindly stored inside while we did our tour. Again here is a Yelp review which shows how impressed people have been, as we become too.

Tremendous view. While up there, supposedly among the rattlesnakes although we did not see any, Sean pours a Rose while looking over the valley. Then we go back to the winery and try several of the wines. Tom and Pat decide to become members of the Repris wine society and take a half dozen wines home. Repris was another great experience.

But the day is not over yet! We drive to another quite quirky town, Port Costa, for dinner. Not as quirky as Chloride, Arizone but quirky just the same.

Yes, while eating the Risotto, I broke a crown of one of my molars which put a real dampener on my day. So as I said, the day started (the Raspberry) and ended (broken tooth) badly but what wonderful times in between with the Taco Truck, plus Lasseters and Repris wineries. We go home and crash.

It was an absolutely beautiful day, somewhere in the early 90s. In April?? Any way, we needed to sit inside because it was too hot in the sun outside. There was shade for the wait staff but not the customers. Hmm, a little strange.

We then go to Sausalito but a town that had always been too touristy had gotten much worse so I stay in the car. The girls do a quick walk along the length but I am not sure if they stopped in anywhere. We were going to be given the opportunity to take the Ferry across the Bay from there but I decide I have had enough action for the day. We drive back over the Bridge and spend some time driving through Golden Gate Park. We then drive towards home.

Tom and Pat have tickets to Game 7 of the first round of the Ice Hockey finals with eir team, the Sharks, playing. They suggested that I go with Tom to the game but I declined and so Pat & Tom were to go. Julie and I decided we would cook at home so we went by a Whole Foods store to pick up more provisions. The guys depart and we do some minimal cooking.

Leave Grand Canyon to Catch up with the Family

Tuesday, 29 April

We need to get on the road soon as we have a plane flight to catch back in Las Vegas. Sally has prepared us a nice takeaway Breakfast although we do eat most of it there. We say goodbye to our very nice Hostess and her fine house, oh and the Dog and Cat too. Sally very kindly allowed us to print our boarding passes for the flight later today. We make our way in good time with me not having any driving troubles this time. We get to Kingman and I blow a big chance to go to In and Out, thinking that I had seen other choices directly on the road without jumping off the freeway – WRONG.

So we drive and drive with no logical rest or food place in sight. We see these funny, hand made signs along the road advertising Chloride Arizona. So we decide we will go there. It is a 5 mile deviation from the main road up into the hills. Well, what a decision that was – it was an old silver mining down with not many mines left and all the people live in Caravan parks. Here are some of the sites.

One thing you can say, one would have to go a long way to get an experience like Chloride. Any way, we keep driving and go over our bridge again, which we still could not see as a bridge. We have some spare time so I drive back down to Hoover Dam and up to the other side.

We are cruising along when Julie all of a sudden notices that our plane has nearly finished boarding. For some reason my phone’s clock was an hour off, I thought we had tons of time. Any way, the gate is just across the way and we get on the plane. A nice, uneventful flight to SFO. Brother Tom and Wife Pat pick us up from SFO. On the way we cross over another interesting Bridge:
