Julie had not slept on the previous flight but it finally got to her

Although I am not interested in any of the movies in the selection and really needed some sleep, there is a stupid Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson movie on at a nearby seat called the Skyscraper. or something like that. It sucked me in although I never totally understood what was going on.

My personal server who ensured that I had lots of good Shiraz while on the flight

Eventually I crashed big time. I had had some sleep on the first leg but was obviously quite tired as I slept through the lights on and breakfast service and was only awakened around when we were going to land.

When we land in Melbourne, I go on to the baggage area. The Immigration camera once again rejects me so I go into a regular line but the wait was not too bad and the Lady immigration officer was really nice.

I grab my suit case and go into the rest room, disabled of course, and get some fresh clothes as the 32+ hour of flying had left me in quite a mess. Julie has to pick up the pre-ordered duty free.

When I get out of the rest room I am surprised to have Julie waiting there with her bags on a trolley. The kids had grabbed her bags off of the carousel and put them directly on the trolley. They then left to catch an Uber home. We go through customs fairly quickly and are not searched. We go to take an elevator to the first floor where the Uber rides are from but there is a big queue so we take a taxi instead, Finally home, it was nice to be back.

Observations

* I was surprised at how many same sex couples that we saw along the way in Europe. They were in a variety of age groups from young adults to very senior people.

* Many of the same sex couples were mixed race as well.

* We were quite lucky with the weather much of the journey with “heat waves” caused by the “non-existent” global warming.

* Two of the absolute highlights of the trip were late additions and ones I had been quite skeptical about. The castle outside Versailles where we stayed with the tremendous Emma and family and Luxembourg for different reasons.

* The Kids were very useful in handling our luggage. They did have there share of fights along the way.

* The Peter Allen reference. Although we saw and did lots of nice things, in general Australia has just as good and most of the time better. For example, I could not get a decent Bratwurst in Berlin but at the Vic Market the next day after we returned I had one from the Bratwurst Shop that is really good.

Bonus

Our friends David and Kate had gone one two trips with Captains Choice while we were away. They left before Julie had departed and got back about the same time as us. So to “prove our toughness” we meet them at Dainty Sichuan in South Yarra for dinner that night. They had been to the similar areas as us in Scandinavian and around, in more depth and well before we got there. There second trip was all over South America in a private jet. We really enjoyed the food at DS, the Ants climbing trees fantastic, fish slices, etc. There were no leftovers which was unusual.

Anyway, here are some of their photos from the Panama part of their trip.

A Massage in Sweden

Sunday, 30 September, 2018 – Nice Looking Day

This Hotel also offers free breakfast. It is quite a good and varied selection. It is also reflecting the issues from yesterday, there are lots of dirty tables and not enough staff to clean them.

My selection – the chicken balls were good.

Julie has booked massages for us in the top floor. We go up there and then jump into the outdoor pool which is well heated and steaming. We also get a great view over much of Stockholm, including the many churches who have visible clocks on their towers. I did not take a camera so there are no shots from up there. I promise to get relevant pictures from there tomorrow.

I go in for the first massage. Chas, note the Post title is not Swedish Massage. The masseuse is not with a beautiful blonde girl like the one who gave Red Grant a massage in From Russia with Love. Instead, the masseuse was a Turkish guy I called Barry. He really knew his stuff and I ended up with several bruises as a result. He asked me at the end what did I think. I said that I was a real mess and spent too much time on the computer. He said that he could feel that. Hmmmm.

Julie followed me after spending that hour in the pool and the sauna. In the interim, I had a shower and did some hand washing as most of my clothes were quite dirty. When Julie came back from her massage I was virtually ready to go.

We had agreed with the kids that we would do the Hop On / Off bus again. We go out to opposite Central station and board the bus. It is to take of in 10 minutes, as usual that meant 30. No photos from me from the bus but Ryan and Tanika hopped off at the second stop in the tour for the Old Town. A few photos from Tanika.

They also did a tour of the Vasa. This was an unsinkable ship, just like the Titanic, that sunk on its first journey. It stayed at the bottom of the seas for centuries and was relatively recently raised, in the last 50 years.

Not sure what it was but it is amazing

We got off at the second location near the Old Town as we found the tour to be boring. A couple of photos from our visit.

Outside the Whiskey Warehouse

I had been in this whiskey shop several times in the past when I was on business tips to Stockholm. It had a different name and owner then. We went in, looked at the lunch menu and I decided it was not for me. We made a booking for that night. We walked back to the apartment, it was only a KM or so, but as we crossed the river, I started feeling really sore. Julie went out prancing and when she returned I told her that I could not do the walk there and back. So she cancelled the booking and went out to the local store to buy some food for a picnic.

What with our own wines, we had a good meal at a fraction of the cost. We understand that the kids also got similar food from the super market. The end of a very eventful day.

Visiting the Old Dart

While these other posts are going on, friends Neil and Toula Bishop are tripping around the Old Dart. So, all of the stuff below is from Neil as our Host Guest. No censoring allowed. The following is the notification we received from Neil before they departed.

Just to let you know that Toula and I are having a month or so’s break, looking for slightly warmer weather , some relaxation and shared new experiences. My last day in the office will be Friday, 20th July and I return to hard work again on Monday, 27th August .

Our itinerary is broadly as follows:-

Fly to Dublin on the 22nd and after a couple of settling in days we will tour the southern areas , including Kilkenny, Kinsale , Dingle before heading up the west coast to Doolin, Clifden and Galway before returning the VW to Dublin on 9th August and add a couple of days there , but in a different location.

We will then take a train or bus to Belfast, learn about The Trouble s and make a fullish one day tour of the Antrim Coast to view the geologic wonder of the Giant’s Causeway, the cliff-edge ruins of Dunluce Castle, etc.

Neither of us has been to Ireland before. We will not be hurrying and be looking to absorb the culture , history, literature, engaging with people, listening to the brogues of south and north, enjoying the pubs and the music. Then there is the physical side, the green hills, narrow roads, sheer cliffs, craggy islands, crashing waves (and golf courses!).

On 12th August we take the short flight from Belfast to Edinburgh for four nights where it will be busy at festival time. Whilst we’ve each been before we thought we thought another taste of Scotland would be worthwhile and as simply as we can make it. We’ve booked an evening at the Tattoo, because it is on at the time.

Then on the 16th we go to London by train for the last leg of the journey, staying for six nights in Bloomsbury. We’ve not made definite plans yet and will simply will do what comes naturally at the time .

We leave for home on Wednesday 22nd, arriving on the 24th and some jet lag out of the way before my return to work on the Monday, 27th August.

Greetings from Kinsale

Day 5 of our trip, after 2 nights each in Dublin and Kilkenny.
Just arrived in our fairly plush resort in seaside Kinsale, where there was a wedding reception underway from well- heeled families, given the outfitting and presentation.
I think I may have mentioned that friends from Melbourne are staying here at the same time. We have just made contact and drinks are on soon, followed by dinner. They are generally on the same itinerary as us and we will meet again in Galway, all co-incidental.
Had a great day in Kilkenny yesterday. Toula likes markets so we went there first after the usual big Irish breakfast. Then a worthwhile visit to Kilkenny Castle, I think about 700 years old with a great history. There were quality shops nearby and Toula found herself with a nice new jacket. Then we took the car on a hike through nearby villages, aided by our smartphone as a GPS, without which we certainly would be still finding our way out from the narrow, winding roads. There was one village, Inistioge, that had an historic bridge worth photographing. Back on the motorway we reached Waterford Crystal, but nothing acquired. On returning to Kilkenny needed refreshing and went to a pub called The Hole in the Wall. It was built in 1592 and only about 12 people can fit in. It was so crowded that you just have to engage with the other customers which was really interesting as it was a mixture of locals and tourists, coming and going. Very eccentric, very entertaining and we got good info for our forward travels. Polished off the day with an excellent Italian dinner. The black Dover sole, topped with a few prawns was completely to my liking.

Barcelona Q & A

Q: Patrick, I did not think you were near Barcelona. What gives?

A: Yes, you are right, we did not get to Barcelona this time, although were there a few years ago. The reason that this subject is brought up is because of the horrendous happenings there last week.

Q: So why have you included something about Barcelona in this Post?

A: Because our close friends Neil and Toula were just two blocks away in Barcelona when the vigoro hit the mixmaster.

Q: OK, but this is a food and wine blog so why cover this at all?

Because in spite of the carnage et al in Barcelona, Neil and Toula have encountered some magnificent dishes in Barcelona. I have decided to put these snaps into this as a Guest Post.

Black pudding with Squid, delicious
beetroot carpaccio with prawns, so delicate and full of flavour.
Green tea noodles with mushrooms, beef, spicy sauce with okonomiyak
Charcoal Iberian pork ribs
Prawns tempura with dashi, yum
Tempura maki, salmon, avocado and fresh cream cheese- delicious

Thanks, Neil. They all looked magnificent.

Guest Post – Parachilna

First Guest Post from Geoff Nicoll former Senior Consultant from my old company

Yes, the photos and most of the words have come from Geoff Nicoll who travelled to the South Australian Outback with Wife Amelia and Sons Lucas and Thomas.

“We have just spent the school holidays on a trip to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia and I thought that I should share a couple of photos of the culinary highlight of the trip.

Parachilna is a tiny town just north of the Flinders Ranges, with one pub (The Prairie Hotel) and not much else.

The Prairie Hotel is well-known in South Oz for their “Feral Antipasto” comprising smoked ‘roo, camel mettwurst, emu pate, goats cheese and bush tomato chutney’

Amelia and I shared a “Feral Antipasto” for lunch and the boys each had Camel Sausage Roll with chips. We all felt that our meals were a highlight of the trip (and there were plenty of highlights).”
